On a Mission

Die Zeitungen sind voll davon. Seit Monaten ließt man es. Kalifornien, der achtgrößte Wirtschaftsraum der Welt, steht kurz vor der Pleite! Und A. Schwarzenegger, a.k.a. „Der Gouvernator“, erwägt drastische Kürzungen zur Sanierung des Haushalts. Schließung sozialer Einrichtungen, Schließung von Nationalparks, Kürzung der Sozialleistungen um nur wenige zu nennen.

Um möglichen Auswirkungen auf Wirtschaft und Ökosystem auf den Grund zu gehen, haben Simon und ich uns aufopferungsvoll dazu bereit erklärt uns aus erster Hand einen Eindruck von der kritischen Lage im Golden State zu verschaffen. Die Forschungsreise beginnt am 10.08.2009 und führt uns über Philadelphia direkt in das im Süden Kaliforniens gelegene San Diego. Hier werden wir gleichzeitig unsere Basisstation für die nächsten sechs Wochen aufschlagen. Ausgehend vom Ortsteil La Jolla wird unsere Mission die folgenden Ziele enthalten:

1. Stärkung der kalifornische Wirtschaft durch unsere unermessliche Kaufkraft (insb. die Unterstützung der Burrito-, Taco- und „Erfrischungsgetränkeinsdustrie“)
2. Sichtung möglicher Schäden in den betroffenen Stateparks
3. Täglich mehrfache Überprüfung der Wasserqualität an kalifornischen Stränden
4. Spontane Tagesausflüge im Großraum San Diego, Orange County und L.A. zur Aufdeckung regionaler Diskrepanzen
5. Studienreise entlang des No. 1 Highways zur Dokumentation strömungsbezogener Unterschiede der Wassertemperatur in So- and NorCal und einer möglicherweise vorhandenen Korrelation dieser Unterschiede zum Partyverhalten in San Diego und San Francisco.

Wie man den hoch gesteckten Zielen auf den ersten Blick entnehmen kann, werden wir vor lauter Arbeit keine Luft zum atmen haben und private Interessen werden ganz klar hinten anstehen müssen. Aus diesem Grund werden wir ständig von verschiedenen Expertenteams aus Frankfurt, Nürnberg, Düsseldorf, München und Hamburg (Panama) unterstützt.

Schnorcheln

habe ja lange nichts mehr von mir hören lassen. Deswegen hier mal wieder ein kleines Appetithäppchen von dem, was hier im Moment so passiert.

Gestern Abend haben Christian, ein paar Freunde und ich den Entschluss gefasst heute mal schnorcheln zu gehen. Nachdem wir es dann endlich geschafft haben uns eine einigermaßen brauchbare Ausrüstung, sprich schborchel, Flossen und Taucherbrille zu holen, ging es ab in Richtung La Jolla Shores (sprich: La Hoya), ein Stadtteil/Strand im nördlichen Teil von SD. Wir wollten vom Strand aus ins Wasser, was ich persönlich ja ziemlich unspektakulär fand. Genau an der Stelle an der wir rein wollten, etwas abgelegen, hat Laura uns dann auch darauf hingewiesen, dass da an der Ecke eine tote, ordentlich angenagte, Robbe hinvegetierte, woraufhin erste Zweifel aufkamen ins Wasser zu gehen. Wir haben einen anderen Taucher gefragt, ob es Haie gibt und ob sie gefährlich wären. Nachdem er Entwarnung gegeben hat, sind wir dann also doch ins Wasser gagangen. Da waren nur einige kleine Rochen und kleinere Fischschwärme. Nachdem wir jedeoch etwas „abgedriftet“ sind, wurde die ganze Sache doch noch interessant. Uns ist aufgefallen, dass unter uns plötzlich vermehrt kleine Haie (1m – 1,50 m) geschwommen sind. Absolut Fasznierend. Wir wussten, dass es kleine Katzenhaie sind, haben uns ruhig an der Oberfläche des ca. 1 1/2 – 2 Meter tiefen Wassers aufgehalten und haben echt beeindruckende impressionen der schönen Tiere aufgenommen. Wir werden auf jeden  Fall ein paar Dollar in eine „Kamerahülle“ zum tauchen investieren, um das nächste Mal selber ein paar Fotos machen zu können. Das Video zeigt die Leopardenhaie an genau der Stelle in La Jolla. Heute war es leider etwas diesig und es waren nicht sooo viele Haie wie in dem Video dort.

Nach einem kleinen Surf zurück zuhause haben wir uns dann noch weiter über die Haie informiert und mit erschrecken festgestellt, dass die Dinger lediglich kleine Fische und Oktopusse fressen. Uns stellt sich halt jetzt die Frage, was für ein Gerät die Robbe auf dem Gewissen hat 🙂

Newsflash

Hey Guys,

few days^left since I wrote my last article. Although the semester just started last week and therefore we were really busy all day long. Sadly we were not able to enroll to our classes and have to crash them. That means we must go to a class and ask the Prof. if there are any open seats in the class. Finally I got some classes that should be counted back in Koblenz. I think the classes will not be too difficult, but you have to work constantly to get a good mark. On Monday we are going to move to our house. There’s a little patio in the front, including a pavillion and a hammock.

Actually my batery is low again 🙂 I’ll write more news when we moved to our condo.

Sweeeeeeeeeet

The last days where really crazy. Since we went to Panda Express, a Chinese fastfood restaurant, and Christian had a fortune cooky that said something like „You achieve anything you want“, we’re just riding the perfect wave. As I already told you we found a great house in a district called Pacific Beach, right at the beach.

Now that one week in SD is already over, we have to look for a car. And this is where it is really going to be crazy. We just had a party yesterday evening and after being kicked out of the club, in Cali they close between 1 and 2 a.m., we went to the beach, because we have not been tired so far. After deciding to go home, Christian said something like „We definately have to look for a car. We have to pass back our Thunderbird. JUST ONE SECOND LATER we saw a Jeep standing right in front of our Hostel with a for rent sign on it. The car was in a great shape and when we noticed that the owner even stays in our hostel we went completely crazy. I think I have not laughed liked this or a long time and the one’s who know me better, even know that a laugh a lot. Today we met the owners, a couple from Swiss, and they just want to sell the car, including two surfboards, when we have to pass back our Thunderbird.

Moreover it’s even getting a bit busier. We applied to the University today and courses are going to start next week. I’ll write more about it, next week.

*For those who wonder about the title. We got friend with a guy from a local surfshop called Chaz and everytime you tell him what you are going to do right now he just answers „SWEEEEEEEEEEEET“:-)

Love on first sight

Just some time lefme up t since  I blogged something, but niw I’m going to tell you about the last days and the first days here in Ocean Beach San Diego. Even while driving down the westcoast with the Amtrak Surfliner, I just knew that the next five months are going to be unforgetable. The landscape here is unbelievable. And when I finally arrived at SD Central, I have been completely blown away.

I just checked in at the Ocean Beach Int. Hostel at Wednesday. Christian, who was already here, piced me up and just introduced me to and old friend of him from Las Vegas who stays in SD for a few days. I have to say that the Hostel is quite cool and most of the people, actually from all over the world, are really nice. We have a 3 Minute walk to the Beach and went Bodyboarding and tried to surf in the last days.

But it’s not just fun over here. Due to the fact that we want to study and live here for the next months, we started to find an appartment or a house to live in. Everbody told us, that it ist really hard to find something, especially near the Beach. Nevertheless we took our Ford Thunderbird V8 LX and drove to Pacific Beach (PB) to check out block after block and look for „for rent“ shields. We actually had some calls, but most of the times there only were 2 bedroom appartments or the prices just were rediculous. But Suddenly we saw another shield, a 2 Bedroom Apt., too, but we decided to call the number. A guy, looking like a Greek, who was actually from Syria but lived in Poland for the last years, came out. YEAH, we just got the jackpot. The guy (Terry) was so cool. He just showed us the Apt. told us to get the security disposit and we will get it. Here is jut a photo of the house. Actually we live in a house behind it, but it looks quite the same.

Just 500 metres to the Beach, therefore we just have the duty to buy surfboards and learn it. You can also see our V8 Thunderbird on the picture.

My battery is just low, so I’ll won’t write more right know. But just visit the blog steadily and you’ll find more information about our trip to SD.

Camarillo

Yesterday I decided to go to Camarillo, while Till had to fix a friends computer. He told me that there are lots of outlets over there and I took his car to drive about one hour to the small city north of L.A. If you ever drive through Cali, I recommend you to take the Nr. 1 Pacific Highway. The countryside is unbelieveable and you just want to stop every few minutes to take pictures of the amazing scenery. Here’s just a basic impression of what it feels like standing on a rock, breathing the fresh air and watching the endless range of the pacific.Sadly it was noon, because I would really appreciate to be at one of these spots to see a sundown.

When I finally arived in Camarillo I was stunned. The Outlet-Center seemed to be a whole district with shops from Vans, DC etc. to Giorgio Armani, Hugo Boss and so on. Due to the fact that it was Saturday, it took me about 20 minutes to park my car. I can tell you –> Camarillo can be a real threat to your credit-card!!! You can nearly buy every kind of clothes and the one’s of you who have ever been to the US know about the „buy one, get one 1/2 off“ offers 🙂

Although I was quite reserved and just bought some clothes I really needed. Skateshoes, surfshorts and some T-Shirts.

While shopping, a kind of flight show was going on right above the Outlets. Sadly I missed to take good fotos, because always when I just put my camera back to my pocket the old second world way planes came back and flew approximately 50 metres over the facilities. I wasn’t fast enough to get my camera started 🙂

So if you around this area and you need clothes, don’t miss Camarillo!

Venice Beach

Okay, I finally arrived in the US, so I try to write in english now. The flight was okay and it wasn’t as much stress in ATL as I expected.

So I arrived at LAX at 06.00 pm and Till akready waited for me to catch up. After waiting for my luggage it was a 15 minute ride to his appartment in Venice. But instead of going to sleep we had to buy a mattress for me. Another serious issue was to get something to eat. Delta Airlines food wasn’t so good 🙂 We went to a Mexican and ordered the “Super Nachos”!!! Great! I just fell in love with Mexican food here in Venice (yesterday I had a “Jr. Super Deluxe Burrito” –> even better).

And Venice Beach, for sure, is just incredible. The appartment is just 2 minutes away from the pacific and the world famous Beach. I already tried to catch my first waves nut it’s really really difficult. Although I think I’ve made a quite good job for the first time. While Till is working I just check out the neighboorhood and whole Venice Beach. Sadly I got no own car, therefore I’m quite limited in getting around. But in the eveninng we just cruise around and I already saw the Rodeo Dr, Hollywood Dr and the Walk of Fame etc.

I’ve not so much fotos yet, but here is just an impression of what I’m going to enjoy in a few minutes.

If my foot is okay tonight, we’ll have a small session right at the beach!

Umgeknickt!

Am Samstag bin ich zurück nach Düsseldorf gefahren, um noch ne Woche mit meinen Eltern und alten Homies zu verbringen. Am Sonntag war skaten gehen auf jeden Fall Pflicht. Haben uns dann entschieden in ’nen neuen Park in Duisburg zu fahren. Naja, 20 Minuten hat’s echt Spaß gemacht, finde den Park echt cool, aber dann bin ich voll umgeknickt. Der Tag war gelaufen und außer kühlen konnte ich nichts mehr machen.
Zum Glück ist es nicht so schlimm wie ich erst gedacht habe. Bin Am Montag direkt zum Doc. Irgendein Band im Fuss ist wohl „nur“ leicht überdehnt und ich hoffe, dass ich am Wochenende wieder normal laufen kann. Spätestens in 2 Wochen ist der Fuss dann hoffentlich wieder voll belastbar.

Für mich war es auf jeden Fall erstmal ein Schock und ich hab direkt an nen Bänderanriss oder sowas gedacht. Das wäre der Horror, weil es wohl bestimmt mindestens nen Monat gedauert hätte, bis der wieder einigermaßen auskuriert wäre. Zum Glück hat es sich als nicht soooo schlimm herausgestellt. Und in SD kann ich kann hoffentlich wieder voll durchstarten!!!

Ocean Beach International Hostel

Die Vorbereitungen laufen mittlerweile auf hochtouren. In 2 Wochen geht’s ab. hab mir gerade erstmal ein Zimmer in einem Hostel gebucht. Das Hostel liegt echt direkt am Pazifik. Vielleicht bleib ich einfach da! Sieht auf jeden Fall schon ganz schwer nach USA aus das Ding. Leider hab ich es noch nicht hinbekommen das Streetview Bild direkt in den Artikel einzubauen. Sollte aber dann nächstes Mal auch fluppen!

Am 10. geht’s los!

Am 10. August ist es endlich so weit. Ich packe meine Sachen und werde Deutschland für die nächsten fünf Monate hinter mir lassen. Erstmal geht’s nach L.A. Till besuchen. Seine Bude ist direkt in Venice, schon mal ein ganz guter Start. Ich hoffe, dass ich/wir in SD etwas mit ähnlicher Lage bekommen. Am 20. geht’s dann runter nach SD. Da werde ich dann Christian und Mehmet treffen, die auch beide aus Koblenz kommen. Sieht ganz danach aus, dass wir die ersten paar Tage in ’nem Hostel schlafen müssen und uns von da aus erstmal um eine Bleibe kümmern.

Auf jeden Fall werden wir euch hier ab dem 10. August (hoffentlich) regelmäßig mit neuen Bilder, Stories usw. auf dem Laufenden halten!!!
